Key Concepts in "As Above, So Below"
Microcosm and Macrocosm:
- Macrocosm refers to the greater universe, the cosmos, or the divine realm.
- Microcosm refers to the smaller, individual aspects of reality, such as humans or the material world.
The principle of "As Above, So Below" teaches that the structures, laws, and patterns governing the macrocosm are reflected in the microcosm. For example, the cycles of celestial bodies, such as the movements of planets and stars, influence earthly events, personal lives, and human behavior. Likewise, the inner workings of the soul or consciousness are seen as reflections of cosmic forces.
Correspondence:
Events or patterns occurring in one realm (say, the spiritual) have a corresponding event or pattern in another realm (say, the physical). This concept reinforces the idea that various dimensions or levels of reality aren't isolated but are in constant dialogue with each other.
The Hermetic Law of Correspondence posits that our mental states—thoughts, beliefs, and emotions—are connected to the larger universal mind or consciousness.
Manifestation and Reflection:
The external world (above) is a reflection of the internal world (below), and the changes we make within ourselves can be manifested in the external world. Conversely, by studying the universe (above), we can gain insights into our inner being (below).
